2013 Chairman's Award Application

Unearthing the true “FIRST moments” are rare and beautiful experiences for a team. Code Red Robotics had its moment in the Newton Division finals for Rebound Rumble. Going against all odds, Code Red went from a discouraging 88th seed to sharing an alliance third ranked team, cheers coming from all angles. But the cries from the audience were not aggressive, We all cheered together, danced together, and in that moment we realized that winning really isn’t everything. As enticing as the prospect of winning seemed, we were overwhelmed by the knowledge that anything we did would make Code Red history. Over the last two years, the focus of Code Red has shifted away from being solely robot-oriented; we are now a vibrant source of engineering inspiration in our entire community.

The Cheapway

Code Red takes pride in its creativity and ability to manufacture fun machines to show the community what Code Red does, allowing the community multiple ways to get a hands-on experience to increase the community’s positive interactions with technology. The Cheapway, built in 2005, was inspired by FIRST’S founder, Dean Kamen. Before founding FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition In Science and Technology, Dean Kamen invented the segway among other things, including a stair-climbing wheelchair.

Code Red in the Media

In the 2012 game, Rebound Rumble, two Alliances of three teams compete by trying to score as many basketballs in the hoops as possible during the two- minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score Alliances more points. Alliances are awarded bonus points if they are balanced on bridges at the end of the match. In matches where opponent Alliances work together to balance on the white “Coopertition®” bridge, all participating teams earn additional valuable seeding points.
